From 3D Geometry to Production-Ready Cutting Files
Complex metal structures often start with a strong visual concept. Before such a concept can be produced, the design geometry needs to be translated into clear, controlled and manufacturable output.
For this project, Trimm Design & Engineering supported the technical preparation of several complex 3D elements with a triangulated design language. The scope included freeform object geometry, curved surfaces and sculptural components that had to be converted into workable production data.
The main challenge was not only the shape itself, but the level of control required in the translation from 3D model to cutting files. Every line, curve and component needed to be reviewed with production in mind.
Engineering between design and fabrication
A 3D model can communicate the design intent, but fabrication requires technical certainty.
Our role was to help bridge that gap. Trimm worked from the supplied 3D geometry and supported the preparation of structured CAD output for production. This included geometry review, file organisation and the preparation of DXF cutting files.
The project required a careful balance between the original design intent and the practical requirements of manufacturing. With complex triangulated structures, even small deviations in geometry, positioning or file preparation can have a significant impact during production and assembly.
Scope of work
Trimm’s scope included technical engineering support for multiple elements and delivery stages:
- Reviewing supplied 3D geometry
- Preparing and structuring model data
- Translating freeform 3D shapes into production-oriented output
- Preparing 2D DXF cutting files
- Checking curves, surfaces and triangulated geometry
- Separating output per object, component and delivery phase
- Supporting the transition from design model to fabrication files
The project contained several object groups and required multiple iterations to refine the output towards a usable production package.

Complex Forms. Clear Output.
Supporting specialist fabricators
This project is a clear example of how Trimm can support specialist fabricators and metalworking companies with additional engineering capacity.
We can assist when a project contains complex geometry, limited internal engineering capacity, a tight planning or a need for production-oriented CAD output.
Our strength lies in translating design information into clear technical files that support the manufacturing process.
